Witness - Cardinal Vincent Nichols
Born in Crosby, Liverpool, on November 8, 1945, Vincent Nichols studied for the priesthood at the Venerable English College in Rome from 1963 to 1970, receiving licentiates in philosophy and theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University. He was ordained a priest in Rome on December 21, 1969 for the Archdiocese of Liverpool. Upon his return to Britain, Nichols studied at the University of Manchester for a year and earned an MA degree in Theology in 1971, specializing in the theology of St. John Fisher. He was then assistant pastor as well as chaplain to several Catholic colleges. Nichols served as General Secretary of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of England and Wales. In November 1991, he was appointed Auxiliary bishop of Westminster by Pope John Paul II. He received his episcopal consecration on January 24, 1992 from Cardinal Basil Hume, OSB. At the age of 46, he was the youngest Catholic bishop in the United Kingdom. His episcopal motto is: Fortis Ut Mors Dilectio, meaning, "Love Is Strong As Death" (Canticles 8:6) He served as Archbishop of Birmingham from 2000 to 2009. On May 21, 2009 Nichols was installed as the 11th Archbishop of Westminster following the retirement of Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor. He was elected President of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of England and Wales by unanimous acclamation in 2009. On February 22, 2014, Archbishop Nichols received the red hat of a Cardinal from Pope Francis in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. A respected Church leader, articulate teacher, courageous and prophetic leader on both the national and international leaders, Cardinal Nichols has played key roles at numerous Synods of Bishops, particularly the recent Synods on the Fmaily. Following the October 15 Synod on the Family, Cardinal Nichols stated in an interview to America Magazine: “What this synod has illustrated to me was the absolute truth of [Pope Francis’] comment last October when he said to us you can speak clearly without fear because I am here, and without the leadership of the Holy Father this synod would have been fractious and it would have had a real struggle to hold together. So what we have lived through is a great reason for every Catholic to rejoice in the charism and the grace that is given to the Bishop of Rome.”
